Find quick information on the most common jewelry metals: platinum, palladium, white gold, yellow gold, rose/pink/red gold, sterling silver, titanium, zirconium, stainless steel, and wolfram tungsten carbide.
PLATINUM
This metal has a silver-white metallic appearance. It is durable and resistant to corrosion. Platinum is also extremely rare – much rarer than gold and silver – and therefore the most expensive jewelry metal.
PALLADIUM
Palladium is a cheaper option to platinum. It gets the same beautiful shiny surface after polishing as white gold, but it is less susceptible to scratches and discoloration than white gold. This is a relatively new metal for jewelry designers and is increasing in popularity, especially since it became officially recognized as a precious metal with a voluntary hallmark in 2009.
WHITE GOLD
White gold is created by alloying pure gold (24k) with white metals such as platinum, palladium, nickel, and zinc. It is more affordable than platinum and yellow gold, and more scratch-resistant and durable than yellow gold.
YELLOW GOLD
Yellow gold is alloyed with pure gold (24k), silver, copper, and zinc. Of all gold colors, yellow gold is the purest, most hypo-allergenic, and requires the least maintenance.
ROSE GOLD - PINK GOLD - RED GOLD
This jewelry metal is alloyed with pure gold (24k), copper, and silver. The copper content allows the red nuance, makes it more durables, and more affordable – compared to yellow gold and white gold.
SILVER (STERLING SILVER)
Pure sterling silver is the whitest metal. Sterling silver is a very soft metal and easy to work with. It can be shaped, re-sized, and soldered. Sterling silver is sometimes plated with rhodium to act as a hard protective layer. Even though sterling silver costs significantly more than titanium, it is still a very affordable jewelry metal.
TITANIUM
order Asacol This metal has a darker gray/brown appearance and is very durable. There are a lot of titanium in the world so the prices can be kept low. Titanium is a lot cheaper than silver and is an extremely good jewelry metal if you are looking for affordable quality.
ZIRCONIUM
Zirconium has a similar color as titanium, is very durable, and is in the same price range as titanium. The main difference though is that zirconium is easier to work with, which means that there are more designs for rings in zirconium than in titanium.
STAINLESS STEEL
Stainless steel is a perfect jewelry metal if you are on a smaller budget. Stainless steel is durable and relatively hard, making it ideal for accessories, as well as engagement and wedding rings.
WOLFRAM TUNGSTEN CARBIDE
This jewelry metal has a dark gray appearance, and takes a higher luster when polished. Wolfram tungsten carbide is increasing in popularity due to its durability and that it is in fact unbreakable! However, it is not indestructible and can be cracked upon impact with a hard surface in a case of emergency.
